St Nicholas

Boston's St Nicholas Church is one of those places that stops you in your tracks the moment you round the corner. The tower - all 272 feet of it - dominates the flat Lincolnshire landscape like nothing else around for miles. It's massive. Properly massive. Built over centuries from the 14th onwards, this is a working parish church that takes your breath away whether you're into medieval architecture or just after a decent walk from the town centre.

Inside, the scale doesn't diminish. The windows are enormous, flooding the space with light, and the craftsmanship in the stonework reminds you why people invested so much labour into building things that were meant to last. The clerestory is particularly striking - those upper windows let you see exactly how the medieval builders solved the problem of lighting a vast interior. It's the sort of place where you find yourself standing still for longer than you'd planned.

This works best if you're genuinely interested in church architecture or medieval history - you'll spend a good hour here if you're the type to read the plaques and study the details. Kids might get restless unless they're keen on climbing (if the tower's open). Admission is typically free, though donations are welcome.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - New Farm Holidays or Wood Farm Camping are closest - and you've got Boston's market town buzz on your doorstep, plus this architectural heavyweight just waiting. Well worth an afternoon.
