St Paul’s Church Covent Garden

The portico catches you first - that proper grand neoclassical front facing the piazza, done up by Inigo Jones in the 1630s. Inside, it's all high ceilings, soft light through tall windows, and a surprising calm given you're slap bang in the middle of London's busiest square.

This is a working church, which matters. You're not shuffling through a museum; people actually worship here. The interior's been restored with taste - nothing overdone, just good proportions and a real sense of peace. The altar's nothing flashy, but there's dignity in that restraint.

Walkers and theatre-goers pass through regularly. History buffs will appreciate the connections - Pepys worshipped here, and the place survived the Great Fire of 1666. You can spend twenty minutes having a proper look, or just pop in for five if you're between catching a show at the nearby theatres.

St Paul's works best as part of a wander through Covent Garden proper - an hour maximum if you're seeing the church and the piazza.
