St Peter & St Paul Church, Old Brampton

The crooked spire of Chesterfield dominates the skyline around here, but venture into Old Brampton and you'll find something altogether quieter. St Peter & St Paul Church is a proper medieval structure - all stone and history, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The church dates back centuries and sits at the heart of what was once a significant settlement, though these days the village has shrunk around it.

Inside, there's decent medieval woodwork and the usual accumulation of memorials and tombs that tell you something about who mattered locally over the past few hundred years. It's the kind of church that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-off. The setting is genuinely pleasant - you're walking through an old churchyard with mature trees, which does feel properly removed from modern life even though Chesterfield's only a few miles away.

Worth stopping for if you're already in the area, particularly if you're a church-spotter or interested in medieval Derbyshire. Give yourself half an hour. It won't take much longer, but that's rather the point - this isn't a blockbuster attraction. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Darwin Forest or Chatsworth Park, it's an easy afternoon diversion. Poolsbrook Country Park is also within easy reach if you're combining a walk with your visit. Best approached on foot from the village rather than driving directly to the church - that way you get a proper sense of how Old Brampton sits in the landscape.
