St Peter's Church, Upwell

The church sits quietly in Upwell, a village that feels properly stuck in time, east of Wisbech. St Peter's is a striking medieval building - all flint and stone - and walking through the door is like stepping back centuries. The interior's what gets you: soaring ceilings, intricate woodwork, and the sort of peace that makes you forget the outside world exists for a bit.

It's the kind of place history enthusiasts will spend a solid hour poking around, reading the memorials and taking in the architecture. Families with young children might find twenty minutes enough unless they're really into spotting gargoyles. The churchyard itself is worth a wander - proper atmospheric with old headstones and mature trees.

Upwell isn't a tourist honeypot, which is rather the point. There's no queue, no admission charge as far as we know, and that's refreshing. Check opening times before you visit though - village churches can be temperamental about access. It pairs well with a stay at Westerby Farm Camping and Glamping just up the road - proper base for exploring the Fenland landscape. If you're camping with the llamas at Glamming with Llamas in Norfolk/Cambs instead, it's a short drive over worth doing one afternoon.

The Fens aren't dramatic, but there's something compelling about their emptiness and history. This church is exactly the sort of building that rewards curiosity rather than demanding it.
