St Pierre's Great Woods

Walk into St Pierre's Great Woods near Chepstow and you're suddenly somewhere proper atmospheric - ancient oaks and beeches crowd overhead, light filters through in dusty shafts, and the whole place feels like it's been here for centuries. Which it has. This is old woodland, the kind where you half expect to turn a corner and find something from a Welsh legend staring back at you.

The forest sprawls across decent acreage, with paths threading through at various levels of effort. It's straightforward walking rather than hardcore hiking - fine for families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground, and absolutely the sort of place history types will spend hours photographing moss-covered stumps and wondering about centuries of timber working. Bring a dog and they'll have a field day tracking scents under the canopy.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so treat it as a proper nature walk rather than an attraction with amenities. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're going to see much of it, though you can knock off a shorter loop in 45 minutes. Spring's excellent when the woodland floor erupts with bluebells, but honestly any season works - autumn light is stunning, winter gives you sight lines you don't get in summer.

If you're based at Penhein Glamping nearby, this is the sort of place you'd slip in between other activities round Chepstow rather than make a special trip for on its own. Combine it with Tintern Abbey or a walk along the Wye and you've got a solid morning sorted.
