St Piran's Church

The walk down to St Piran's Church is honestly half the appeal. You're tramping through proper Cornish countryside - gorse, bracken, the works - before the 6th-century church suddenly appears, half-buried in sand dunes like something from a dream. It's small, austere, and completely absorbing once you're there.

This isn't a grand cathedral experience. The church itself is modest, with thick stone walls and a simple interior that speaks to centuries of pilgrims doing exactly what you're doing. On a clear day you can see for miles across farmland to the coast. Photography types will spend longer than they planned trying to capture the light.

Walkers will genuinely enjoy the trek from Perranporth - it's about forty minutes each way on decent paths, though the final approach can be boggy depending on the season. Families with small kids might find it a bit remote and the walk tiresome. History enthusiasts will want to linger, reading the gravestones and soaking up the isolation that pilgrims must have sought out here.

It's free to visit, no set hours - you just turn up. Go early if you're coming from one of the nearby parks like Haven Perran Sands or Treamble Valley, before the light gets hazy. Allow two to three hours including the walk. It's not the kind of place you tick off a list. You either feel the pull of it or you don't.
