St Senara's Church, Zennor

The church sits on a cliff edge in Zennor village, a place so quiet you'll wonder if you've driven into a painting. St Senara's dates back to the 12th century, though the tower and most of what you see now came later. Inside, the stone is cool and grey, light floods through plain windows, and there's a real sense of age without being oppressively heavy about it.

The famous thing here is the mermaid carving on a bench end - a siren with a mirror and comb, completely medieval and completely odd. You'll spot it easily enough. The churchyard itself is the real draw though. Walk around the back and the views open up across moorland and towards the coast. On a clear day it's genuinely stirring.

This works best for people who like a bit of history without the crowds, and for walkers planning to tackle the Zennor Head coastal path nearby. You could spend twenty minutes inside or an hour if you're the type to read every inscription. It's free to enter, and there's rarely a queue.

If you're based at Polmanter Touring Park just down the road, this is an easy detour on a coastal loop. St. Ives Holiday Village is close enough too, though Zennor itself feels genuinely remote despite being only a few miles away. The village has a decent pub if you need sustenance, but plan accordingly - nothing fancy.
