Stanah Estuary / ICI

The Stanah Estuary is one of those places that creeps up on you. Head out from Poulton-le-Fylde towards the water and you'll stumble onto a proper working industrial landscape that's somehow also a haven for wildlife. The old ICI chemical plant dominates the skyline - all cooling towers and Victorian brick - but it's the mudflats and salt marshes stretching beyond that hold the real interest.

This is a walker's spot, plain and simple. The estuary opens up views across the Wyre and towards Morecambe Bay, and birdwatchers come here year-round to spot waders, wildfowl, and the occasional rarer visitor. It's not manicured or visitor-friendly in the slightest - no facilities, no interpretation boards, just you and the landscape. Bring wellies. The light here changes constantly, especially at dusk, and photography types will find endless angles.

Families with young kids might find it bit sparse for a dedicated trip, though older children interested in industrial heritage or nature will engage properly. The contrast between the manufacturing complex and the wild estuary tells Lancashire's story better than most museums could.

With Moss Rose Camping and North View Caravan Site both within easy reach - five to six miles away - you could easily slot this into a wider park holiday exploring the Fylde coast. Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk, longer if you're serious about birds. Best visited outside school holidays when it's genuinely quiet.
