Standon Hill

The walk up Standon Hill is one of those Dartmoor climbs that feels properly rewarding without being punishing. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes from Okehampton if you take the direct route, and the views across the moorland plateau are genuinely good - on a clear day you can pick out some serious distances across Devon.

It's a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical scramble. The ground underfoot is typical Dartmoor: boggy in places, rocky in others, and never quite as pleasant as you'd hoped. The summit itself is modest but gives you the sense of standing somewhere that matters, which is what you want from a peak. Walkers will get the most from this one - it's not particularly thrilling for younger kids, and the moorland views, while expansive, lack the drama of somewhere like Hay Tor.

The real draw is how well it fits into a broader Dartmoor strategy. Pair it with Dartmoor National Park itself (just over 6 miles away), and you've got a solid day sorted. The nearby caravan parks - Lydford and Langstone Manor - both pull five-star reviews, so accommodation's solid. Early morning is your best bet weather-wise; moorland fog can roll in fast and turn this into a proper trudge.
