Stapleford Castle

The earthworks are what strike you first - massive banks and ditches that rise up from the Wiltshire landscape like something the land itself has shrugged up. Stapleford Castle is actually an Iron Age hill fort, not a castle at all, and what you're looking at are the defensive ramparts that kept ancient Britons safe around 2,000 years ago.

There's not much to see in terms of standing structures - no stones, no ruins, just the archaeology written into the ground itself. But if you've got an interest in how people actually lived before the Romans arrived, or you're the sort who enjoys reading a landscape like a map, it's genuinely fascinating. The views across the Wiltshire downs are tremendous, and the walk up is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit dull since there's nothing tactile to explore.

It's free and accessible, which is the main thing. Allow 45 minutes to wander around properly and take in the setting. Best visited on a dry day when you can actually see the ground clearly - mud obscures the detail.

If you're camping at Marshwood Farm or the Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site - both within easy striking distance - this works as a decent morning walk before heading into Salisbury itself. It's not a major draw on its own, but pair it with the town's cathedral and the nearby Bronze Age monuments, and you've got a solid day exploring Wiltshire's ancient credentials.
