Staverton Ford Plantation

A stretch of woodland near Newton Abbot that feels properly remote despite being minutes from town. Staverton Ford Plantation is old growth forest - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which counts for something these days.

The main draw is walking. There's a decent network of paths threading through mature trees, and if you time it right after rain the whole place smells like earth and life. It's the kind of forest that makes you understand why people got spooked by woodland in medieval times - dappled light, quiet, genuinely atmospheric. Not dramatic scenery, but atmospheric.

This works best for walkers and anyone after a proper woodland reset rather than a tick-box tourist moment. Families with older kids will get something out of it; toddlers might find the path surfaces a bit rough in places. There's no facilities to speak of - bring your own water.

It's free to access, though parking can be tight depending on when you show up. An hour to ninety minutes is realistic unless you're doing a longer ramble. The light in autumn is particularly good here, all amber and shadow through the canopy.

If you're based at Ashbourne Woods holiday park just up the road, this makes an easy morning walk before heading into Newton Abbot proper. It's not somewhere to plan a day around, but as a quiet half-day addition to a Devon break it absolutely works. Go early to avoid the school run traffic.
