Stephenson Steam Railway

The Stephenson Steam Railway runs between Whitley Bay and Percy Main along a restored branch line that once carried freight and passengers through Tyne and Wear. You're climbing aboard genuinely restored heritage trains pulled by proper steam locomotives - the kind that actually worked these tracks decades ago. The journey itself is the main event: about half an hour trundling through the coast and countryside with the rhythmic clunk of steam and iron doing what it was built to do.

This is absolutely brilliant for anyone with even a passing interest in railways or engineering. Kids go mental for it, especially if you time it right and grab a seat where they can see the boiler and pistons working. If your children are under five though, they'll get restless - it's not a white-knuckle ride, just genuine, peaceful heritage transport.
