Steve's Endeavour (North Entrance)

The limestone caves around Portland aren't exactly Derbyshire's show-stoppers, but Steve's Endeavour has a scrappy charm that appeals if you're already in the area. It's a rift cave - basically a vertical shaft with narrow passages that take proper squeezing to navigate. You won't find tourist facilities or electric lighting; bring a torch and reasonable fitness, because it's genuinely claustrophobic in places.

The cave itself is free to explore, though information about opening times and access is thin on the ground - the Google Sites link exists but doesn't offer much beyond confirmation it's there. Local knowledge helps; ask around Weymouth and you'll usually find someone who's been down. It's the kind of place geologists and keen cavers get genuinely excited about, while casual visitors might find fifteen minutes enough.

Timing-wise, allow an hour if conditions are decent and you're not panicking in confined spaces. Don't bring young kids unless they're properly experienced - it's not a family cave attraction with hand railings and information boards. Weymouth itself is just three miles away, which makes sense as a base if you're combining this with a holiday park stay. Chesil Beach Lodge Park (4.6 miles) has reasonable reviews and puts you close enough for exploring Portland's caves without staying on the peninsula itself. Summer visits are safer than winter, when water levels can make passage tricky. It's genuinely worthwhile if you're into geology or caving, but skip it if you want something more accessible.
