Steyne Wood

Ancient oak and ash trees tower above well-worn paths that wind through this proper woodland just inland from Ventnor. Steyne Wood stretches across the southern downs, offering a welcome escape from the coastal crowds that pack the seaside town below. The canopy filters sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor, where bluebells carpet the ground in late spring.

Families will find the main tracks easy enough for pushchairs, though the more adventurous routes climb steeply through dense undergrowth. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space to let them off the lead without worrying about traffic or livestock. The wood connects to longer walking routes across the downs, making it a cracking starting point for more serious hikers.

Bird spotters should bring binoculars. The mixed woodland attracts everything from common robins to the occasional red kite circling overhead. Early morning visits reward you with the best wildlife activity before the day trippers arrive.

The wood sits conveniently between several holiday parks including Appuldurcombe Gardens and Grange Farm Camping, making it an ideal afternoon outing when you fancy stretching your legs away from the caravan site.
