Stock Hill

Climbing to 1,323 feet above the Ribble Valley, this modest peak delivers surprisingly good views for relatively little effort. Stock Hill sits just north of Clitheroe and forms part of the Bowland Fells - proper Lancashire countryside that feels genuinely wild despite being within easy reach of the M6.

The summit itself is marked by a trig point and offers panoramic views across the valley to Pendle Hill on clear days. Getting there involves a steady climb through open moorland, though the path can be boggy after rain so decent boots are essential. Allow about two hours for the round trip from the nearest parking.

Walkers with a bit of experience will appreciate this one more than casual ramblers. The terrain isn't technical but it's proper fell walking - no marked trails or fancy signage, just you and the landscape. Families with older children who don't mind getting their boots muddy will find it manageable, though toddlers definitely won't.

It's free to access year-round, though winter conditions can make it challenging. The view from the top is well worth the walk on a decent day, taking in the whole sweep of the Ribble Valley.
