Stock Wood

Stock Wood sits just outside Chippenham and is exactly what you want from a Wiltshire forest - proper woodland without the tourist crowds. There's a decent network of walking trails through beech and oak that range from gentle loops to proper leg-stretchers, depending on what you're after.

It's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birds rather than other people's ringtones. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and come autumn the colours are genuinely worth the drive. Winter's fine too - muddy but manageable, and you'll probably have the place to yourself.

Walkers will get the most out of Stock Wood. It's not a destination in itself - no tearoom, no visitor centre, no playground - but it's a solid afternoon option if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites. The Moors Campsite is barely two miles away, making it handy for morning and evening rambles. Roe Deer Fields and Plough Lane are similarly close if you're looking for a base.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to properly explore rather than just potter about for twenty minutes. Bring proper boots - the ground gets boggy in places. It's free to visit, which is always welcome, though there's no obvious car park signage so you might have to hunt a bit.

Not a headline attraction, but a solid addition to a walking-focused park holiday in the area. Chippenham itself is only a few minutes away if you need shops or lunch.
