About Stocking Springs
It's excellent if you've got kids who need tiring out or if you're a serious walker wanting something between a stroll and a proper hike. The terrain is soft underfoot, muddy in wet weather, and there's a genuine sense of being somewhere wild despite being ten minutes from St Albans. Birdsong is proper loud in spring and early summer.
No facilities that I could see - no cafe, no car park signage - so come prepared. Free to enter, which is a bonus. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're taking it slowly and actually looking at things rather than just marching through.
If you're staying at Almshoe Glamping nearby, this would work well as a morning excursion before heading into St Albans for lunch. The glamping site itself is comfortable enough, though Stocking Springs is where you'll get the actual nature fix. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but it's real woodland, and that's worth something. Go on a weekday if you can - weekends bring walkers from town.
