Stockings Wood

Walk into Stockings Wood near Maidstone and you're in proper old-growth woodland - the kind of place where the canopy gets thick enough that you actually feel the temperature drop. It's a straightforward forest walk through mixed deciduous trees, with trails that wind between the trunks without demanding much climbing or technical footwork. The undergrowth changes seasonally; spring brings carpets of bluebells, autumn turns everything golden and damp.

This is walkers' territory, honestly. Families will find it manageable for an hour or two, though there's not much to hold children's attention beyond "look, trees and mud". History buffs might appreciate that it's proper Kent woodland, the sort that's been here for centuries, but there's no castle ruins or interpretive boards to make sense of it. What you get is peace and the chance to actually think - bit of a rarity these days.

The wood connects well with a caravan park holiday. Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just 3.2 miles away, making it an easy walk or short drive for an afternoon stretch of the legs. If you're staying at Chegworth Mill Glamping, slightly further out at 5.2 miles, it's worth the trip as a proper forest break from more manicured attractions. Bring decent boots - it gets boggy - and don't expect café facilities. Plan on two hours if you're taking it slow.
