History buffs will appreciate the authenticity, though there's not much more to see beyond the posts themselves and a small explanatory plaque. Children might be intrigued for all of five minutes, especially if you explain how people once had rotten vegetables thrown at them here. The posts sit right in the town centre, so you can easily combine a visit with a wander around Berkhamsted's shops and cafes.

It's hardly worth a special trip on its own, but if you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots like Merlin Farm or Hill Farm, it makes for a quick stop while exploring the historic market town. The location is free to view any time - it's just sitting there in the street after all. Allow ten minutes max unless you're really into Tudor punishment methods. Best combined with a visit to Berkhamsted Castle ruins, which are far more substantial and just a short walk away.
