Stokesay Castle

The fortified manor sits just south of Craven Arms like something from a medieval storybook, except it's genuinely real and you can walk right up to it. Stokesay Castle is that rare thing - a proper 13th-century stronghold that's survived largely intact, all crenellated towers and timber-framed gatehouse, without the tourist trap feel of the bigger castles. You get to wander the grounds and peer at the exterior architecture, which is the main draw. The oldest parts date back to the 1290s, and the south tower still stands commanding and sturdy, while the domestic range tells you how people actually lived here rather than how they fought.

Historyados will find plenty to chew on. The timber-framed gatehouse is particularly good - you rarely see them survive this well. But honestly, it's not the sort of place where you'd spend three hours. An hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who photographs every stone detail. Families with young kids might get restless quickly, though older ones who like clambering about will be fine.

Its real strength is as a stop en route between Craven Arms and the Shropshire Hills proper. If you're camping at Greenway Touring or Shropshire Hills Glamping - both within two miles - this is your obvious half-morning excursion. The setting is genuinely pleasant, all green fields and proper countryside, and it costs nothing to have a proper look around the outside. Free admission is its strongest card. Go when the light's good in the afternoon if you're photographing it.
