Stone Marsh

The marsh stretches out grey and vast, all salt-flats and creeks that shift with the tide. Stone Marsh, just east of Walton on the Naze, is one of those places that doesn't announce itself with signs or visitor centres - you simply walk out across the mud and find yourself genuinely alone. What you get is birdwatching territory, proper stuff. Lapwings, redshanks, the occasional marsh harrier if you're lucky. The stone itself - remnants of old sea defences - sits scattered across the flats like forgotten markers, a reminder of centuries of people trying to hold back the estuary.

It's not for everyone. Kids under ten will find it tedious within half an hour unless they're genuinely mad about wildlife. But walkers and bird enthusiasts will spend a good two to three hours here without checking their watch. The light in late afternoon is exceptional, and there's a genuine sense of being at the edge of something - land becoming sea becoming land again with each tide.

Free access, naturally. The real challenge is timing it around the tides - slog across mud that sucks at your boots when the water's out, or keep to the harder paths if you're not equipped for it.
