Stonea Camp

A low mound rising abruptly from the flat Cambridgeshire fenland - that's Stonea Camp, and it's rather more interesting than it sounds. This Iron Age hill fort sits just outside March, commanding views across territory that would have mattered enormously to ancient tribes. The earthworks are still visible, which is genuinely impressive given how many centuries of ploughing and drainage have happened around it.

What you get is essentially a walk around a lumpy field with proper archaeological bones. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café - just the camp itself and your imagination. History types will find it fascinating; families with restless children under ten might struggle. Walkers who don't mind a bit of fenland tramping will appreciate the open landscape and the sense of actually standing where people once fortified a settlement.

It's free to access and takes maybe an hour including a full circuit. The best time is late spring or early autumn when the ground isn't waterlogged and the light is decent for photos. March itself is a workmanlike fens town with proper shops and cafes if you need to eat.

If you're based at Fenland Camping and Caravan Park just down the road - only 2 miles away - this makes a decent morning detour on a park holiday. Pair it with exploring the wider fenland landscape or head into the Peterborough direction for more substantial attractions. On its own, Stonea Camp rewards curious visitors but won't consume your whole day.
