Stonepit Wood

Walking into Stonepit Wood feels like stepping back in time. This Leicestershire woodland sits just outside Atherstone and does exactly what a proper forest should do - it gives you space, trees, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think.

The wood itself is manageable rather than vast, which works in its favour. You're looking at a decent network of paths threading through mixed woodland, with the sort of dappled light that makes even a grey English afternoon feel rather special. Bring decent boots if there's been rain - it can get muddy underfoot, but that's half the charm, isn't it?

This is the sort of place walkers will appreciate far more than casual strollers. You'll want a good couple of hours minimum to do it justice, and families with young kids might find it becomes a bit samey after the first forty minutes or so. If you're after proper woodland tramping rather than a quick photo stop, you'll get your money's worth.

Free to access, no gates, no nonsense. Just turn up and walk. Best visited autumn through spring when the undergrowth isn't quite so thick and the light cuts through better.
