Stonequarry Wood

The footpaths through Stonequarry Wood feel properly established - someone's been maintaining these trails for years. Walking in from Lingfield, you're in amongst mixed broadleaf and conifer, the sort of Sussex woodland that doesn't make a fuss but rewards proper attention. The quarry itself is the draw here. Old stone workings create a landscape that's genuinely unusual for the region, with the surrounding trees making the whole thing feel enclosed and rather intimate.

It's the kind of place walkers will clock immediately. The paths are well-trodden but never crowded, and there's enough variety in the terrain to keep a decent hike interesting - ups and downs without being brutal. If you're camped at Hook Farm just down the road, this sits about five miles away, close enough for a morning sortie or an afternoon stretch of the legs.

Give it two to three hours if you want to do the woodland justice rather than just dash through. The wood itself has character - you're not trudging through some corporate forestry block. It's the sort of Sussex spot that locals know and outsiders miss, which is exactly how it should be. Free access, no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.

Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull if they're expecting something more dramatic. History enthusiasts though will appreciate the industrial archaeology embedded in the landscape. Serious walkers will simply enjoy the peace of it.
