Stoners Rough Wood

A proper woodland walk near Maidstone, Stoners Rough Wood is the kind of place you'd stumble upon by accident and then return to deliberately. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough to offer genuine shelter on drizzly days, and the pathways wind through without feeling managed to death.

It's straightforward woodland rather than anything spectacular. You won't find dramatic vistas or rare specimens, but that's rather the point. Walkers and dog owners get genuine value here - the routes are easy to navigate, not too demanding, and you can knock out a satisfying loop in under an hour. Families with younger kids will do fine as long as they're happy to amble without constant entertainment. If you need climbing frames or a visitor centre, you'll be disappointed.

The woodland sits roughly five miles from Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, so it works as a morning outing if you're based there. Pop in, stretch your legs, breathe some forest air, and you're done. Admission appears to be free - it's not cordoned off or ticketed. There's no specific visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so arrive with reasonable expectations and sensible footwear.

Worth the detour if you're in the Maidstone area and fancy something low-key. Don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip, but it's a solid little break from the caravan site.
