Stone's Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Marlborough, Stone's Wood delivers exactly what it promises - trees, quiet paths, and enough space to actually hear yourself think. The forest floor is soft underfoot, with beech and oak providing decent shade even on warmer days. It's the sort of place where you can burn off an hour or two without feeling like you're trudging through managed parkland.

The main appeal here is straightforward: woodland wandering without faffing about. Dog walkers clearly love it, and families with younger kids won't struggle with accessibility or getting lost. If you're the type to spot woodland birds or enjoy the smell of damp earth after rain, this is your territory. History buffs might find something in the surrounding Marlborough landscape, but Stone's Wood itself is about walking, not visiting attractions.

Allow at least an hour if you're going to do it properly, longer if you're inclined to poke about. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Free to access, naturally.

Stay at Hillview Park or the five-star Ridgeway Campsite nearby, and you've got a solid base for exploring the area. Combine it with walks across the Downs or into Marlborough town itself. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point. Sometimes a forest is just a forest, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
