Storey's Wood

Walk into Storey's Wood near Garstang and you're immediately surrounded by proper Lancashire woodland - the kind with decent paths, mature trees, and enough space to actually stretch your legs without bumping into crowds. It's a straightforward forest walk, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. You get a few hours of fresh air, birdsong, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife if you're lucky enough. The woodland floor changes with the seasons, which means it's worth revisiting - muddy and dramatic in winter, green and soft underfoot come spring.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination that'll keep small children entertained for hours, but if you've got older kids who can manage a decent hike, they'll be fine. Families doing a week at one of the nearby caravan parks - Claylands, Orchard Glamping, or Gibsons Barn are all within easy striking distance - might use it as a half-day break from lounging around the static van.

There's no entrance fee or formal opening hours as far as I can tell, which is how it should be. Aim for two hours if you want a proper walk without rushing. Come on a weekday morning if you can - weekends pull in more people, and a forest walk loses something when there's chatter everywhere. Late afternoon autumn light through the trees is stunning, though the paths get slippery faster once the leaves start coming down.
