Strouds Coppice

The woodland around Strouds Coppice offers proper forest walking territory just outside Reading - the sort of place where you can actually lose the road noise within five minutes. It's a working coppice, which means the trees have been managed for centuries, creating that distinctive open understorey you don't always find in southern forests. The coppice sits well within striking distance of Ravenswing Park, which is just 1.5 miles away and offers more facilities if you're camping or caravanning - you could combine a morning forest walk here with afternoon activities at the park without much hassle.

Reading's close enough that you could visit as a day trip or slot it into a longer stay. The woodland's free and open-access, though you'd want proper boots or wellies depending on recent weather - it's Hampshire forest after all, which means mud is often on the menu. Allow two to three hours for a good circular walk without rushing. Visit in early summer when the canopy's full but before holiday season crowds descend on the nearby parks.
