Studland Wood

The woodland paths through Studland Wood feel properly timeless - tall pines and sandy soil that crunches underfoot, with the kind of quiet you don't get near Swanage's beaches. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured country estate, which means the trails meander without much fanfare and you genuinely lose the sound of traffic within minutes.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially families after a couple of hours away from the seaside crowds. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy, so it won't knacker the kids, though younger ones might struggle with longer loops. Spring is lovely when the light filters through properly, but summer gets midge-ridden so come prepared. There's something refreshing about the straight pines - very un-English, almost Continental.

Based just 3 miles from Swanage Bay View Holiday Park, it's ideally positioned for a morning ramble before heading back to the caravan or chalet. The wood works as a decent counterpoint to a beach-heavy break - gives you a change of scenery without going far. Birdwatchers often spot woodpeckers and if you're lucky, adders sunning themselves on the paths (leave them be). It's free to access, no gatehouse nonsense, which is refreshing.

Not a showstopper attraction in itself, but the kind of place that becomes a proper highlight once you're actually walking it. Bring a decent map though - signage is minimal and paths can feel unmarked in patches.
