Sunnyhill Covert

The woodland around Tregaron runs thick and atmospheric, and Sunnyhill Covert is exactly the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a proper forest walk - dense canopy, forest floor thick with leaf matter, the kind of place where light comes down in shafts rather than floods everywhere.

You're looking at ancient mixed woodland here, the sort that rewards a slow ramble. Paths wind through beech, oak and conifers, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth the detour from nearby activities. It's not dramatic - no peaks, no viewpoints worth writing home about - but that's rather the point. This is about atmosphere: dappled light, birdsong, the smell of damp earth.

Walkers will get the most from it. You can spend anything from 45 minutes to a couple of hours here depending on which routes you take and how often you stop to check you're going the right way (the signage is adequate but not brilliant). Families with young kids who enjoy exploring might find it engaging, though there's no adventure playground or defined attractions - it's just trees and paths.

The forest is free to access, no facilities on-site, so bring water and pack your rubbish out. Winter can be muddy and gloomy. Autumn is probably best - clearer light, fewer midges, proper colour.

If you're based at Cambrian Mountains Glamping and Camping just down the road, this makes a solid half-day break from site. It's close enough to pop to without overcommitting your time, real enough to feel like you've done something rather than just wandered about.
