Sunnyrig Plantation

A sprawling forest walk just outside Dumfries that catches most visitors by surprise. Sunnyrig Plantation isn't going to win any awards for dramatic vistas, but it's genuinely pleasant if you need a proper stretch of the legs without faffing about with mountain navigation.

The woodland here is thick and well-established, with decent paths threading through. You're walking under proper trees rather than trudging across moorland, which makes a difference when the Scottish weather turns damp. The floor is soft underfoot most of the year, and it's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - more of a solid local resource when you're staying nearby, perhaps at Halleaths Caravan Park six miles down the road. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main routes, though there's nothing flashy to hold their attention beyond "trees are big".

Bring proper boots if you've had recent rain. The admission situation is typical of Scottish forestry - likely free, but I'd check locally in Dumfries before turning up. Allow a couple of hours if you're being leisurely. Morning visits are best for avoiding the school run traffic.

It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it fills an afternoon gap nicely when you're basing yourself in Dumfries and the weather isn't playing ball for the main attractions.
