Surprise View Point

The name does exactly what it says on the tin. You round a bend on the B5322 between Keswick and Borrowdale, and suddenly the whole Lake District valley opens up in front of you. Catbells rising sharp to the left, Derwentwater spread below, the fells beyond rolling away in layers of grey and green. It's the sort of view that makes you forget to breathe for a second.

There's a small car park right there - no faffing about looking for spaces - and you can be out and looking in under two minutes. The viewpoint itself is just a cleared area with a few benches, nothing fancy, but honestly that's the point. You're not paying for facilities; you're paying with a short drive and you get proper mountain scenery for free.

Walkers between Keswick and Borrowdale will find this a natural stopping point, especially if you're with anyone who's flagging. Kids usually perk up the moment they spot the water. On a clear day it's genuinely special; on a grey one it's moody and atmospheric, which works just as well.

If you're staying at Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping Club, it's barely ten minutes away, so pop up here before breakfast for the light or late afternoon when the crowds thin out. The drive down into Borrowdale is stunning anyway, but this viewpoint is where you actually stop and take it in properly.
