Swaffham Plashes

The Plashes are a proper bit of Norfolk woodland just outside Swaffham, with a network of paths that wind through mixed forest and occasional open glades. It's the kind of place where you can lose an hour without trying, though don't expect dramatic vistas or tourist infrastructure. What you get instead is quiet - actual quiet, with birdsong and the occasional rustling in the bracken.

Walkers will find this worth the detour, especially if you're based at Breckland Meadows Caravan Park nearby. The ground is mostly manageable underfoot, though it can get boggy after rain, so decent shoes matter. There's no formal car park that I could locate, and the paths aren't signposted like a country park, which means it feels a bit more like an adventure and a bit less like herding through a visitor attraction.

Families with young children might manage thirty minutes before the novelty wears off, but older kids who actually enjoy a proper walk will get more from it. Birdwatchers should absolutely come here - I saw woodpeckers and nuthatches on my visit. The best time is early morning when the forest is genuinely alive and you're not competing with other walkers.

It's free to access, which is the main thing. Don't expect facilities - bring water, stick to marked paths if you can find them, and respect the fact that this is working woodland, not a municipal park. It's a genuine local spot, which is precisely why it's worth knowing about.
