Swains Lane Nature Reserve

The lane itself is the real draw here - a proper wooded corridor that cuts through the Somerset countryside just outside Taunton, lined with mature trees and alive with woodland birds. Swains Lane Nature Reserve isn't a manicured visitor attraction with car parks and interpretation boards. It's more intimate than that: a chance to walk under cover, listen for nuthatches and woodpeckers, and spot whatever's moving through the undergrowth that day.

Walkers will find this worthwhile, especially those after something quieter than the big honey-pot reserves. The woodland canopy keeps things cool even in summer, which makes it decent for a midday wander when you'd normally be squinting at a cafe menu. Kids older than about eight will get something from it - the younger ones might lose interest once they've poked a few sticks in the leaf litter.

It works well as a morning outing if you're based at Holly Bush or Waterrow Touring Park, both within easy striking distance. The walk takes an hour or so without rushing. Spring brings migrants through, and autumn can be brilliant for fungi and colour, though honestly the green tunnel's pleasant any time it's not waterlogged.

Free to access, which is always welcome. Don't expect visitor facilities - this is a nature reserve proper, not a leisure destination dressed up as one. Bring binoculars if you're into birds, or just turn up for the shade and quiet. It slots neatly into a park-based holiday without eating up your whole day.
