Swites Wood

The woodland around Lingfield rewards a proper wander if you're after something quieter than the big country estates. Swites Wood itself is a decent stretch of forest - mature trees, decent paths, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Most people miss it entirely, which is the whole point.

It's good for families who don't need fairy tales and ice cream vans. Kids will manage the walks fine if they're used to muddy boots, though there's nothing here that'll hold their attention for hours. Proper walkers and nature types get more from it - the paths are well-trodden enough to follow but quiet enough to feel a bit remote from Lingfield town itself. You'll see birds, maybe deer if you're lucky and keep still. Early morning is infinitely better than weekend afternoons.

Allow an hour or so depending on how far you fancy going. The wood doesn't demand a full day, but it's a proper addition to a Sussex walking trip rather than a destination in itself. Since Hook Farm Campsite is only just down the road, you could easily base yourself there and use Swites Wood as part of a broader exploration of the area - the Ashdown Forest is closer if you want something with more dramatic views.

No visitor facilities that I could find, so come prepared. It's free to wander, though the land is clearly managed and worth respecting. Go when it's dry if you can - it gets boggy after heavy rain and loses its charm when you're squelching through mud up to your ankles.
