Sycarham Wood

You won't find signposts or gift shops at Sycarham Wood - it's proper woodland, the kind where you actually get lost in the trees rather than following a marked trail. This North Yorkshire forest sits inland from Scarborough, far enough away to feel genuinely remote but close enough for a morning excursion if you're based at one of the nearby camping spots.

The wood itself is manageable for families with older kids and decent for anyone who enjoys a straightforward woodland walk. Ancient trees, soft ground underfoot, and enough space to actually breathe - there's no pretence here, no visitor centre, no admission fee that I can find. You just turn up and walk. The appeal is simple: quiet paths, decent light filtering through the canopy, and the kind of peace that Scarborough's seafront promenade doesn't offer.

If you're staying at Scarborough Camping and Caravanning Club or Prospect House Farm Glamping, this works as a half-day venture. An hour's walk is enough to feel like you've properly escaped, though you could stretch it to two if the paths cooperate. Go on a weekday morning if possible - the place draws locals on weekends.

Not life-changing, but genuinely useful if you want woodland without the National Trust visitor experience. Worth the short drive from Scarborough if you're tired of beaches and amusement arcades.
