Talyllyn Railway - Pendre Railway Station

The Talyllyn Railway pulls into Pendre Station like something from a storybook - narrow gauge tracks, Victorian engineering, and genuine steam locomotives that actually work. This is Wales's oldest narrow-gauge railway, opened in 1865, and it genuinely feels like you've stepped backwards in time without the usual theme-park cheese.

You can board here for a seven-mile round trip through the Fathew Valley, rattling past woodland and farmland with the Snowdonia hills rising behind. The journey takes about an hour return, which is exactly long enough - any more and even keen railway enthusiasts start checking their watches. Kids usually go mad for it, particularly if you bag a seat in one of the open carriages; adults tend to appreciate the no-nonsense charm of the thing. Photography types find plenty to do.

It's run entirely by volunteers, which explains both its authenticity and occasional weather closures, so check before you drive over from Tywyn. Admission costs a fair few quid but it's reasonable for the experience. Summer weekends get busy; quieter mid-week runs are better if you hate queues.

Fits nicely into a broader coastal holiday - Tywyn's only a mile away, and several decent caravan parks pepper the area: Gwynedd Holiday Home Park is practically next door, while Cambrian Coast Holiday Park sits five miles along towards Barmouth. It's the sort of thing you do once and remember properly, not something to make a special trip for unless you're proper into railways.
