Tanglandmuir Woods

The moment you step into Tanglandmuir Woods, you realize why locals keep quiet about it. Ancient Scots pines tower overhead, their bark weathered to silver, and the forest floor is so thick with needles it swallows your footsteps entirely. You're just outside Ellon in Aberdeenshire, but it feels miles from anywhere.

This is proper old-growth woodland - the kind that makes you understand why people used to feel genuinely spooked by forests. The paths wind through without hectoring you with interpretive boards, which is refreshing. You can walk for twenty minutes or two hours depending on mood and energy. Walkers will get the most from this place. It's not dramatic in the Instagram sense - no waterfalls or mountain views - but there's something grounding about being surrounded by trees that have stood here for centuries.

Bring wellies if it's been wet. The ground holds water like a sponge. Kids might lose interest after an hour unless they're the type to build dens and hunt for interesting sticks, which, to be fair, is most kids if you let them.

If you're camping at Ythan Valley Campsite just down the road, this is an excellent escape when the site gets busy or you fancy a proper walk. Entry seems to be free - no gates, no faffing about. Winter's actually the best time to visit: fewer midges, clearer sightlines through the trees, and the whole place has a quieter, more contemplative feel.
