Tarts Hill Wood

The woods around Ellesmere are proper walking territory, and Tarts Hill Wood is the sort of place you stumble into without fanfare and end up spending far longer than planned. It's a modest woodland - nothing vast, nothing dramatic - but the paths are decent and the trees create that green tunnel effect that makes you forget you're in the West Midlands at all.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of place where you can do a quick circuit in under an hour or potter about for a couple if the mood takes you. The terrain is manageable, no scrambling required, though it can get muddy after rain so decent boots are wise. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey - there's no destination within, no lakeside clearing or dramatic viewpoint to aim for, just woodland for the sake of it.

What makes it worthwhile is the escape value. You're close enough to Ellesmere that you can make it part of a broader morning walk around the meres, but far enough in that you genuinely feel removed. If you're based at Abbey Green Farm just down the road, it's an ideal post-breakfast stretch without needing to drive anywhere.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of, and no entrance fee - it's just a patch of proper English woodland open to walkers. Free admission and low expectations often make for the best outings. Worth an hour of your time, though I wouldn't rearrange your day around it.
