Temple Copse

A proper woodland walk awaits at Temple Copse, just outside Salisbury. This is old-growth forest at its most English - tall beeches, oak, and ash creating that dappled light you dream about when you're stuck in the office. The paths meander through without feeling over-engineered, which is refreshing. You'll find the occasional bench where you can actually sit and listen to the trees rather than stare at your phone.

It's the kind of place that rewards slow walking more than brisk hiking. Children will enjoy spotting birds and building stick camps, though it's not a destination if you're after a massive adventure playground. Dog walkers clearly use it regularly, and it's well-maintained without feeling corporate. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how thorough you want to be - no need to rush it.

For forest walks in the area, Temple Copse sits nicely alongside trips to nearby New Forest or walks around the Wiltshire Downs. If you're camping at Coombe Caravan Park or Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm - both within a couple of miles - this is an excellent morning or late afternoon escape when you need to stretch your legs without the tourist crowds of bigger attractions.

No facilities to speak of, so bring water. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through gold leaves, though it's pleasant enough year-round. Salisbury itself is just minutes away if you need shops or a proper café afterwards.
