Tewkesbury Abbey

The Abbey dominates Tewkesbury's skyline with a tower so massive it feels like it's about to topple over your head. Built in 1087, this Norman church is one of England's finest - the sort of place that makes you understand why medieval people bothered with such monumental stone-work. You walk in and it just floors you: the ceiling soars up, the light comes through clerestory windows, and the whole thing has an almost oppressive grandeur that photographs never quite capture.

What strikes you most is how busy it remains. This isn't a museum piece cordoned off from daily life - there are still services, still worshippers, and you're genuinely a visitor in someone's place of worship rather than a paying guest in a heritage attraction. The tombs scattered about are genuinely interesting if you're into medieval genealogy, and the sheer engineering of the vaulting rewards a good long stare.

Historians and architecture enthusiasts will spend a couple of hours here easily. Family groups with younger kids might find it a bit heavy-going - there's not much interactivity, just stone and silence. The location is brilliant if you're staying at any of the caravan parks within spitting distance - Millavon is virtually next door, and the Abbey Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is close enough to walk. Tewkesbury itself is pleasant for a wander round afterwards. Allow at least an hour, longer if you're genuinely keen. Check ahead on opening hours as it's still a working church.
