The Bath House Meadow

The Bath House Meadow sits just a short walk from Walton on the Naze, a proper slice of Essex coastland where you can actually see something resembling wild nature. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction - no café, no gift shop, just meadow, marshland, and the birds that come with them. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though it can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

You'll spot lapwing, redshank, and if you're lucky, the occasional marsh harrier drifting overhead. In spring the wildflowers come thick - ragged robin, purple loosestrife - and the whole place hums with insects. It's genuinely quiet, which makes a change from the seafront bustle just over the way. A circuit takes about an hour, though you can spend longer if you're patient with binoculars.

Most visitors are either keen birders or families looking to burn off energy without the theme park crowds. It works well as a morning walk if you're based at Parkdean Resorts Naze Marine just down the road - that's practically on your doorstep. Even from Glamping at Lodge Farm a few miles inland, it's worth the short drive to get proper countryside under your feet. Free to access, naturally. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when wildlife is most active. The reserve is genuinely peaceful and underfunded-looking in the best possible way.
