The Bay of Sutherland

The Bay of Sutherland curves along the northern edge of the Highland coast like a generous smile, and it's genuinely one of those places where you understand why people come back to Scotland year after year. The beach itself stretches wide and golden when the tide's out, backed by rolling dunes that feel properly wild and uncultivated - no promenade, no ice cream vans, just the sound of waves and wind.

What makes it work is the sheer openness of it. On a clear day you get views across to Ben Bhraggie and the surrounding hills, and the light does something strange here - bright even when it's cloudy. The water's cold as you'd expect, but there are rock pools worth investigating if you've got kids, and the beach is manageable for families who don't mind a bit of exposed terrain.

From Dornoch - just down the road - it's an easy drive, making it a solid half-day outing if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Grannie's Heilan' Hame. Most people spend two to three hours here, wandering the foreshore and maybe sitting with a flask watching the light change. It's free, obviously, and there's nowhere to eat or buy anything, so come prepared.

Who should go? Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding, photographers will get proper moody shots, and families with older kids will have a decent time. Little ones might struggle with the exposed feel and lack of facilities. It's not the softly-softly Scottish coast - it's a proper working beach with real weather.
