The BBL Nature Reserve

The vast expanse of water and wetland that makes up the BBL Nature Reserve near Hull is genuinely worth the trip if you're serious about birdwatching or just want to escape the urban sprawl. It's a proper working landscape rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means the birds don't feel hassled and you actually see things.

You'll spot lapwing, redshank, and if you time it right during migration periods, some rarer waders. The paths are accessible enough for most abilities, though boots are essential in winter - the ground gets boggy. Bring binoculars and patience. Realistically, allow two to three hours to do it properly; an hour feels rushed unless you're just popping over from Burton Constable Holiday Park nearby.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading to Spring Valley Campsite or Manor Farm Camping, which are all within striking distance. The reserve is genuinely better visited outside peak holiday times when the car park isn't rammed and the birds aren't spooked by school groups.

Families with older kids who can sit still will get something from it. Young children often find it dull - there's no visitor centre, no café, no attractions. It's just you, the water, and whatever wildlife decides to show up. If you're the type who finds that thrilling, this is your spot. If you need entertainment laid on, head elsewhere.
