The Bog

Walking into The Bog near Braintree feels like stepping backwards in time. This ancient woodland sits low and wet - properly waterlogged in places - which is exactly why it's survived centuries while everything around it got cleared for farmland. You're looking at a genuine Essex wetland here, the sort of landscape that would have covered much of East Anglia before humans decided they wanted to drain everything.

It's a short walk through boggy ground and dense trees, nothing strenuous but you'll want decent boots. The paths are muddy year-round, which keeps the casual visitors away and means you'll often have the place to yourself. Birdwatchers get a lot out of it - the wet woodland attracts species you won't see in drier forests - and anyone interested in how the land actually looked before modern agriculture will find it quietly compelling.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, and admission appears to be free, which feels generous. Allow an hour for a proper walk rather than a rushed loop. The real appeal is the sense of walking through something genuinely old and undisturbed. It's not dramatic or showy, but it works if you're serious about understanding Essex's landscape.

If you're based at Golden Grove Caravan Park or Stocks Farm Camping nearby, it makes an easy morning visit before moving on to something busier. Not the sort of place that will occupy a family for hours, but absolutely worth the detour if you like your nature a bit wild and unmanicured.
