The Broads National Park

The Broads are essentially Norfolk's answer to the Everglades - a sprawling network of shallow lakes and slow-moving rivers that you navigate by boat rather than car. It's proper water country, the sort of place where herons outnumber tourists and the biggest excitement is spotting a kingfisher dart past your cabin cruiser.

You can hire a boat from dozens of operators around Great Yarmouth and spend a week pottering about, stopping at riverside pubs and nature reserves, or just take a day trip if you're staying at Norfolk Broads Haven nearby. The walking is decent too - there are footpaths threading through wetland reserves where you'll see warblers, bitterns, and if you're lucky, otters. Admission is free; you only pay if you hire a boat or visit a specific nature reserve.

It's brilliant for families who don't mind a slower pace. Kids under seven will probably get bored after a few hours unless they're genuinely into birds, but teenagers and water-keen families could easily spend several days here. Serious birdwatchers consider it world-class. The best time is May through September when the weather's reliable and bird activity peaks.

The Broads work well as part of a Norfolk coastal break - you could base yourself at the holiday park and alternate days on the water with time in Great Yarmouth or visiting other parks in the area. Don't expect drama or obvious sights; come for the quietness and the wildlife. It grows on you.
