The Bushes

The Bushes is a proper woodland walk on Nottingham's doorstep, and honestly, it's the kind of place locals know about but tourists often miss. You're looking at ancient forest - the sort with gnarled oaks that have been here longer than you've been alive. The paths wind through thick tree cover, dappled light doing that thing it does when you're deep in the woods, and it feels properly rural despite being minutes from the city centre.

It's a walkers' destination, primarily. You can do an hour's amble or stretch it into a longer afternoon depending on which routes you pick. Families with older kids will get on fine here, though it's not the kind of place to bring a buggy unless you fancy a serious struggle. The terrain's uneven, rooty in places, and muddy when it rains - which it does in Nottinghamshire, fairly often.

What makes it worth the trip is the sense of being properly removed from urban life. No gift shops, no visitor centre, no faffing about. Just woodland. Free to access as far as I can tell, and you can rock up whenever suits. Early morning's best - fewer dog walkers, better light through the trees.
