Saffron Walden's medieval heart beats strongest around The Close, a tight cluster of timber-framed buildings that feels genuinely untouched by time. You're standing in what amounts to a living breathing snapshot of 15th-century town life - wonky floorboards, creaking beams, the lot. It's the kind of place where you can actually picture wool merchants haggling over prices without much effort.

The buildings themselves are the draw rather than any single attraction - this is architecture as the main event. Walk around slowly and you'll spot all sorts of period details that make the place feel authentic rather than theme-park-ified. History buffs absolutely love it, and walkers doing a circuit of Saffron Walden town centre will find themselves naturally gravitating here anyway.

There's no formal admission charge that I'm aware of, and you can spend anything from twenty minutes doing a quick look-round to a couple of hours if you're the type who examines every timber joint. Best visited midweek when it's quieter and you can actually think.

If you're staying at nearby Hidden Gem Glamping or Pightle Farm Campsite, The Close makes an excellent morning's exploration before heading elsewhere in Essex. It's not a destination you'll spend all day at, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in Saffron Walden anyway.
