The Four Continents

Four stone globes rising from a field near Buckingham - that's all you're getting here, and honestly, that's the whole point. Commissioned in the 1990s, these chunky representations of Earth's continents stand alone in the Buckinghamshire landscape with no interpretation board, no visitor centre, no fuss. You pull up, you walk round them, you take a photo, you're done in ten minutes.

It's the sort of thing that works brilliantly if you're already in the area - perhaps camping at Embers Camping over in Claydon - and you fancy a quick countryside meander to break up the day. The scale is oddly impressive once you're standing beside them, and there's something refreshingly blunt about a landmark that doesn't try to sell itself. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming after a few minutes; teenagers could get a decent Instagram shot. Walkers passing through will probably appreciate the oddness of stumbling upon something so deliberately low-key.

There's no admission fee because there's nowhere to pay - it's essentially a farm field attraction. Allow yourself 15 minutes unless you're the type to sit and contemplate large stones, which, fair play if you are. Best visited on a dry day; muddy boots and abstract art monuments don't make for great photos. Combine it with a proper walk in the wider countryside around Buckingham, or treat it as a curiosity stop between other Buckinghamshire attractions. It's not essential, but it's entirely free and entirely strange - which counts for something.
