The Gorse

The Gorse is a proper forest walk that doesn't demand much from you but gives back decent views if you time it right. It's a mix of coniferous and deciduous woodland just outside Herefordshire - the kind of place where the light filters through in that particular way forests do when the sun's at the right angle. You'll find yourself on well-trodden paths cutting through the trees, nothing too strenuous, which is exactly why families and casual walkers seem to gravitate here.

Walkers get the most from it. This isn't a destination in itself - it's more a respite, somewhere to stretch your legs for an hour or so if you're staying nearby. The forest floor changes with the season; muddy and mossy in winter, drier and easier underfoot come spring. In autumn the light gets golden and moody, worth the trip up from Hereford if you've got an afternoon to kill.

With Burhope Farm Campsite just under a mile away, it works brilliantly as a morning walk before packing up camp or a late-afternoon wander when you've had enough of the car. There's no admission charge that I could find, and no formal visitor centre, so it's a fuss-free addition to a park holiday in the area. Allow forty minutes to an hour depending on how far you venture - and don't expect dramatic views or historic markers. It's simply trees, paths, and quiet. Sometimes that's precisely what you need.
